Description
Name: Demeter
God/Goddess of: Fertility, Agriculture, Nature, and The Seasons
Symbol(s): The Poppy, Wheat, The Torch, The Cornucopia, and The Pig
Bio: Sister of Zeus and Mother of Persephone. While she is often described simply as the goddess of the harvest, she also takes special care to protect the sanctity of marriage, the sacred law, and the cycle of life and death, thus her greatest gifts to humankind were agriculture, particularly of cereals, and the Mysteries which give the initiate higher hopes in this life and the afterlife. However, when her daughter, Persephone was abducted by Hades and taken to the underworld, Demeter became too preoccupied with her loss and her grief as she searched endlessly for her, thus the seasons halted and all the crops began to wither and die. Soon faced with the extinction of all life on earth, Zeus sent his messenger, Hermes to the underworld to retrieve Persephone, something to which Hades reluctantly agreed as long as she had eaten nothing while in his realm. However As misfortune would have it, it was soon discovered that Persephone was tricked into eating six pomegranate seeds by one of Hades's minions, thus binding her to the underworld for six months out of the whole year. Due to her position as a Goddess, Demeter was reluctantly obliged to give her blessings to her Daughter's marriage to Hades. Since then, Persephone was forced to spend 6 months of the year in the Underworld, during which time Demeter would fall into despair and once again halt the growing of crops, thus truly beginning the seasons of Autumn and Winter.
